LECTURES

Week 1:Summary or Lecture

In the first week, our instructor told us the nine design principles and the tasks to be done each week and left the get out of class early, let us watch the teaching video she has recorded.Let’s learn to create our own designs through this video.

INSTRUCTION

VISUAL RESEARCH
Elements and Principles of Design

Fig. 2.1 Elements and Principles of Design

Example

1.Gestalt theory

Gestalt psychology leads people to assert that cognition of things is not only about obtaining information from sight, but integrating this information with cognitions, impressions, and experiences already stored in the brain.

2. Contrast

Contrast Achieve a balanced state by using color to contrast the two subjects ,can be a close opponent, showing a strong sense of contrast.

3. Emphasis

Use some unremarkable objects to highlight one of the bright representatives, you can use color and size to show the effect of emphasis.

4. Balance

Make a graphic fully balanced from all sides, resulting in a completely consistent performance to increase the visual.

5. Repetition

Repeating elements in a regular or circular fashion creates interest. Repetition strengthens a design by bringing elements together and bringing a sense of consistency. It can create rhythms (regular, alternating, flowing, random, progressive) and patterns.

6. Movement

Use different lines and graphics to create the illusion that the subject is moving and increase the visual interest.

7. Harmony & Unity

The unity and harmony of the things in the picture are expressed through the same style and the same color, so that they seem to be the same theme.

8. Symbol

Design a simple logo to express the meaning of the object, including company logo and map logo.

9. Word and Image

Integrate fonts into the design to directly express the common meaning of images and fonts.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

1. Principles can be demonstrated more visibly.  2. The repeated size is not necessarily the same, remember to try some colors.  3. Use motion lines to increase visual reference and strengthen the concept of motion.

Week 3

Due to public holidays, this week's class has been cancelled.

EXERCISES

Gestalt theory

2023.4.13
When I first designed it, I wanted people to be able to tell that it was a cat in a pile of black patterns through Gestalt theory.

2023.4.20
During the second design, I hope that people can see a figure in the mouth of this fierce animal through the Gestalt theory.

Final Design:
2023.4.28
For the final design, I decided to keep the original design and add details to make it look more like a cat.

Repetition

2023.4.13
When designing for the first time, I designed a character with the image of a cat and kept repeating it to make the picture look neat and simple.

Final Design:

2023.4.28
Since the original file of the character I designed was lost during the first design, I recreated a new character in the second design and changed its size with reference to the teacher's opinion.

Movement
2023.4.13
When designing for the first time, I hoped to design the movement of the ballet dancer to express the sense of movement, but the teacher reminded that this movement is more like a pure handstand than movement, and more movement elements should be added.

2023.4.23
So in the second design, I kept the elements of the ballet dancer, changed the handstand into a circle in the dance, and added auxiliary lines to make the ballet dancer show the feeling of turning in a circle, making the picture look more dynamic.

Final Design:

2023.4.28
In the final design, colors and guidelines were added to give it a more dynamic look.

Reflection:

From this exercise, I learned how important design principles are to a picture, especially the one I chose, repetition.  The principle of repetition makes the picture look more concise and clear, and emphasizes the whole. The size of each pattern is different, but it can be seen at a glance that it is the same pattern.

These images are all made by procreate, illustrator.
