Task 3
LECTURE
Completed in Task 1
INSTRUCTION
Task 3: Type Exploration and Application
1) Create a font to solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in an area of interest;
2) Explore the use of an existing letterform in an area of interest, improve upon and explore possible solutions;
3) Experiment. Identify potential weaknesses or possible areas of further exploration or experimentation in an area of interest, and provide a creative solution or add value to an existing use by working with materials.
The end result of this task should be a complete generated font (.ttf) with applications.
Idea Proposal
Before I started working on it, I came up with three ideas. Including game posters, movie poster text reproduction and pixel text
I chose the second idea, I wanted to reference and recreate the text from the Hercules movie poster, for which I created a preliminary font.
In-depth analysis of "Hercules", I collected some of the character designs and learned that Hercules' armor features and core elements are thunder and curls.

Based on my research, I found that capitalization better fits the image of Hercules.

Digitization Process

| Fig2.1 Beginning progression (18.10.2023 - Week 8) |
In order to be more consistent with the image of Hercules, I hope to add armor elements to the font.
Mr. Vinod suggested that I could make it stronger and convey the strength of Hercules.

Try to make the font bold to show strength.

I created uppercase and lowercase fonts and symbols after adding the armor element.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I decided to abandon the previous design and redesign it using the original font on the poster.

Font Lab
 |
| Fig3.1Inputting font to Font Lab (15.11.2023 - Week 12) |
Every letter, number, and symbol is entered into Font Lab by dragging and dropping from Illustrator. The element is then placed near the baseline and scaled up or down to fit the achieved dimensions.

| Fig3.3 Kerning process (15.11.2023 - Week 12) |
A general rule of thumb for each letter is a kerning of 50 when aligned left and right. Additional kerning was made between some letters when adjustments were needed to fix corresponding spaces.

Font Presentation and Applications
Font Display Posters
First, I chose a suitable color palette that would be the style of my display poster.

Applications
Application #1
 |
Fig5.1 final font Application - Hercules poster |
The first application was to recreate the title in the Hercules movie poster, which was the original goal for the typeface.
Before implementing the font, I used similarly colored squares to cover and delete the original title.
Application #2

REFLECTIONExperiences
This task has improved my proficiency in using illustrator and font lab, and also improved my attention to the details of fonts, especially how to adjust the appropriate font spacing, allowing me to understand a deeper understanding of the structure of letter forms.
Observations
It allowed me to observe that some seemingly simple words can actually become complete fonts through a tedious production process. It also made me understand the beauty of typography as an art. Although it is not difficult, it requires careful consideration.
Findings
I found that the surrounding text can become part of the inspiration for typography art, which helps us understand the details and process of making complete fonts, and also helps us design fonts.
FURTHER READINGS

| Fig6.1 Typographic Design: Form and Communication (27.11.2023) |
Static typography only has form to communicate with the audience, while dynamic typography uses both form and behavior. Form includes uppercase or lowercase, bold or italics, serifs or sans serifs as the basis for conveying your message. While dynamic typography moves within genres, it now increases the opportunity to communicate from speed, rhythm and sound, which together create an atmosphere, convey a message or display a hierarchy of messages.
