WEEK 5: Typography Task 2 Progress Demo

In this video Mr. Vinod demonstrates what we have to do for task 2 and how we do it starting from selecting text and sketches.

INSTRUCTIONS

For Task 2, we had to create a 2-page editorial spread (200 x 200) using the text provided. We will use Adobe InDesign for layout and presentation of text, and Adobe Illustrator for title presentation.

Layout progress:

Fig2.1 InDesign screenshot

In the beginning, I wanted to add lines to the title to make it look like a roof but in the end it didn't look like it, I also added lines to increase the direction.

I changed the design of the header to look more like a tall building and added a grid to keep things organized.

FEEDBACK:

Week 6:
Questions:
Heading
1. Do the expressions match the meaning of the words?
2. Are the expression well crafted (crafting/lines/shapes)?
Text
1. Is kerning and tracking appropriately done?
2. Does the font size correspond to the line-length, leading & paragraph spacing
3. Is the alignment choice conducive to reading?
4. Has the ragging been controlled well?
5. Has cross-alignment been established using base-line grids?
6. Are widows and orphans present?

General Feedback: Get feedback on exercise and improve. Specific Feedback: The design of the headline does not express the feeling of the roof, and the text is not neat.

Week 7:
General Feedback: Bodoni is not a good typeface to use for the body text. Specific Feedback: No feedback was given in this week.

Reflection:

Experience

Task 2 gave me a very novel experience, because we are responsible for all the design from the title to the text, can experience the average to design the title and text.  And different people have different designs, you can refer to each other and improve.

Observations

I observed how adjusting the size of the text line thickness is very difficult.  Even small changes can make the overall appearance look very different. For example, the size of the text and the different fonts give people a very different look and feel.

Findings

I understand the difficulty of typography because we need to use different elements to design a piece.  I also learned that if I look at my designs through other people's eyes, I can find more new and interesting changes.  And by watching other people's designs more, you can get more inspiration and make your own creativity better.

The Elements of Typographic Style - Robert Bringhurst

The Elements of Typographic Style has received universal acclaim, and yes, it's as good as everyone says it is. It will instill in you a passion for typography. If you only want to read one book on this list, read this one. There is a long chapter on page layout, focusing on book and magazine design, with details on picas and columns, etc. If you're designing for screens, you may find this part less applicable. But aside from that one chapter, most of it is timeless and can be adapted for any print medium.
