Task 2

LECTURES

Completed in  Task 1

Task 2A: Key Artwork

In this assignment we will make a key piece of art. For this exercise we need to use our first name or pseudonym. The letter form explores and combines as many permutations and combinations of our names as possible, and the composition must be balanced to avoid complexity and confusion in order to maintain effective communication.

My design concepts:
1. Eyes: Eyes are the windows to the soul and the most important part of the facial features.
2. Childlike: The eyelashes and eyes are designed in a clever way to make them look more interesting and energetic.
3. Simplicity: You can intuitively see the meaning of my name and the design in it.

Sketches:

Fig1.2 Wordmark Sketch 1 (13.9.2023 - Week 3)

At first, I hoped to use the concept of an hourglass to express the five characters of my name, yauka , but I gave up on this sketch because it was too complicated and incomprehensible.

Sketches#2

Fig1.3 Wordmark Sketch 2 (13.9.2023 - Week 3)

Originally, I wanted to use woo to design, showing the look of a snowman because I was born in winter, but then I found out that we need to use four words to design and rejected this sketch.

Sketches#3

Fig1.4 Wordmark Sketch 3 (13.9.2023 - Week 3)

I used the elements of the little devil and eyes to design the three characters woo. After getting feedback, I increased the number of characters to four and changed them to woyo, and focused on expressing the elements of eyes.

Week 4 Classroom Activities In the 4th week lesson, Mr. Vinod asked us to create a word mark which we printed on t-shirts without thinking about its meaning.

3. Refinement
In week 5, we printed the word mark on A4 paper and showed it to Mr. Vinod.

Task 2B: Collateral

Inspirations / Research:

First, I went to Pentagram to get some inspiration for my brand identity.

Task 2B is a continuation of Task 2A, where we first need to select a color palette for your brand identity on a color search site. We had to take a black and white self-portrait and identify 3 appendages.

Fig.2.1 Color Palette (27.9.2023 - Week 5)

There are 4 colors in the color palette that I have chosen. I chose these colors.

I then started using this color on my main artwork to showcase my brand image.

I used a self-portrait of myself and edited it into black and white. Then, I added the color palette layer.

Commodity:

I found some mockups of collaterals from Pinterest including t-shirt, cup, tote bag, cap, skateboard and file board. Then, I added the brand 'WOYO' to the product.

Week 4 General Feedback: Not yet to done. Specific Feedback: The design of the text is meaningless and cannot represent oneself.

Week 5 General Feedback: Change Woo to WOYO. Specific Feedback: Smooth the sharp corners to make them look more like eyelashes.

Week 6 General Feedback: Expanding the brand identity concept. Specific Feedback: Don’t just slap the same thing on a product.

Week 7 General Feedback: Create gifs. Specific Feedback: Add text with the same color to the background to match the two images. REFLECTION

Experiences
When doing this exercise, I didn’t quite understand how to create a brand identity with my own name at first, but after a round of classes, I understood that I need to make the words meaningful when designing them.  Later, when designing the ig page, I also repeated deletions and modifications many times before I found the most beautiful design.

Observations
During this exercise, I discovered that the meaning of words is the most influential factor in the expression of a trademark, and some expressed meanings can reflect “my” personality.

Findings
I found that when creating key artworks, we should pay attention to whether there is a concept that we want to express. Otherwise, people may not understand the ideas that the brand wants to express. We also need to consider whether the design on social platforms can make people interested in it. and understand the personality expressed by the brand.

FURTHER READINGS

Fig 4.0 - The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli (2010)

Design layout plays a vital role in communicating the designer's vision and requires careful articulation to achieve the desired results. Grids are a valuable aid in layout design, and the incorporation of visual elements must be considered when establishing a grid. The grid mainly ensures consistency in the layout, while the individual elements inject life and interest into it. Equally important is the presence of white space, which allows the design room to breathe and cultivate visual clarity.
