PMD - Task 2: Taylors Coffee Cup Design

Lecture:

 Packaging and product design

Packaging is a fundamental component of marketing and distribution across industries, and different box types can be customized to suit specific needs.

  • Folding carton
  • Hard box
  • Corrugated carton
Folding cartons: made of cardboard and are easy to lay flat, practical and lightweight.
Rigid boxes: luxury goods offer sturdy, non-collapsible support
corrugated boxes: extremely durable and ideal for shipping due to their layered, fluted construction.

Hemmed folding cartons are available in reverse hem (RTE), straight hem (STE), hem snap bottom (TTTSLB) and hem automatic bottom (TTAB) styles.

RTE styles: cost-effective and easy to assemble but generally suitable for lighter items.
STE style: offers a smoother look with hidden edges but is still not suitable for heavy-duty products.
TTSLB style: more suitable for heavier items with a stable display base.
TTAB style offers a sturdy self-locking bottom that combines strength with efficient assembly.

The choice of box type, style and closure emphasizes the importance of choosing packaging that meets product requirements and brand image, enhancing functionality and consumer appeal.

8 packaging design rules need to know before start designing

Effective packaging design goes beyond aesthetics to influence customer experience and purchasing decisions, with 72% of consumers affected by packaging choices. Designers must understand and cater to their target audience. Functional design is equally important, aligning packaging with the purpose of the product.

Minimalistic designs that clearly communicate essential messages eliminate clutter.

The design should also reflect the brand image, and additionally.

Product line consistency enhances brand recognition; while ensuring high-quality printing ensures design results translate into beautiful products.

Coffee cup brief

when creating your packaging, you need a strong brand identity and concept first.

For this project we were tasked with working in pairs to select a partner to design a coffee mug for the Taylor Open House. Traditionally, the culinary school provides a coffee service to parents and potential students during this event.

We try to use some simple styles to design coffee cups

fig1.4 colors

We referred to the school logo color and coffee color for the color scheme we used, hoping to make it look high-end and simple as possible, and to directly express the concept of coffee.

Incorporate the school’s colors and logo into the cup design to create a sense of unity and pride.

First, we came up with a design that incorporated coffee beans and latte art.
The feedback received was too general

Feedback

Week 4 General Feedback: coffee cup design feedback. Specific Feedback: designs is too general.

Week 5 General Feedback: coffee cup design feedback. Specific Feedback: continue with sketches 1 beige design.

Reflection:
I observed the difficulty in designing and making coffee cups. When two people are making one at the same time, there are bound to be different opinions. We chose coffee beans and latte art as the main design, but it felt too general. To improve this, I considered using a more interesting way to express the concept of coffee, adding bubbles at the bottom to express a sense of fun without affecting the overall idea.
